Popcorn Words
Popcorn words are words that the students are introduced to in class each week, and should become words they automatically know when they see them in books. They are also called sight words, or high-frequency words. At RS, we call them popcorn words because they "pop up" all over books we read. Students love finding these words as we read books together. Learning and practicing these words slowly helps students comprehend them successfully. We add these words to our wall so the students can refer to them throughout the day. After learning a new popcorn word, we locate it in poems or books. We also practice spelling it using magnetic letters, dough, paint, white boards, and stamps. We review all the popcorn words each week to keep them fresh in the students' minds. Please practice them with your child at home!
